The Newport County Youth Chorus is an after school choral music education program offered to students in grades 2 – 6. Students meet once a week for one hour to learn songs from different countries, in different languages, and in different styles. Through exploring each unique voice, the chorus grows as a unified team.
The mission of the NEWPORT COUNTY YOUTH CHORUS is to provide an exceptional choral music education program to the youth of the greater Newport/Aquidneck community, to provide teaching opportunities and mentorship to developing teachers from Salve Regina University and local high schools, and to create a community arts organization that serves and connects the many facets of the Newport county community.
Members of the NEWPORT COUNTY YOUTH CHORUS:
Receive a high level music education, which includes vocal development that is appropriate to the singers’ age and ability and increased musicianship knowledge and understanding, all delivered in the context of a diverse music selection (genre, languages, cultures, time periods, religions).
Are encouraged to thrive as a member of a team and as an individual whose unique contribution influences the outcome of our collective goals.
Are led and mentored by positive adult role models including highly qualified music educators and professionals and students from Salve Regina University.
Gather regularly to give back to the community by spreading joy through our music and offering service to our neighbors.
Will be singers who represent different ethnicities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. The most important requirements of a child’s participation in the program is a love of singing, the desire to work collaboratively, a commitment to attend weekly rehearsals and all performances, and the ability to match pitch.
